Central Plenum Kiln Design for Uniform Lumber Drying
Uniform drying is what separates a good kiln from a great one. The single biggest lever on uniformity is airflow distribution — and the single biggest lever on airflow is the plenum.
What A Central Plenum Does
A central plenum collects and redistributes airflow inside the kiln so every layer of every charge sees the same air velocity, temperature, and humidity. Done right, it eliminates the dead zones and short-circuits that produce uneven moisture content and grade loss.
Why Geometry Matters
Plenum cross-section, baffle spacing, and entry/exit detailing all affect how evenly air loads the lumber stack. We've seen kilns gain 10–15% in grade recovery from a proper plenum retrofit on an otherwise unchanged building.
Retrofit Or New Build
Central plenums can be designed into new kilns from day one, or retrofitted into existing buildings. The retrofit case usually pays back inside 18 months on grade recovery and fuel savings alone.
